Lilies

There’s quite the story behind the meaning of lilies, so prepare to regale your mum with this one.

Greek myth has it that Zeus, the king of the gods, cheated on his goddess wife, Hera, with a mortal princess named Alceme. He fathered Alceme’s son, the famous Hercules, and asked Hera if the baby could feed on her heavenly milk. Understandably (!), Hera refused, so Zeus drugged her and allowed Hercules to suckle. Hera awoke, flung the newborn away, and sprayed milk across the sky. Most of it formed the Milky Way, but some droplets fell to Earth and blossomed into white lilies.

This crazy tale made the lily a symbol of motherhood, making it the ideal choice for Mother’s Day. Many of our bouquets feature lilies, be they pink, white, orange or rainbow, so if Mum loves this fragrant flower, you’re in the right place!

Chrysanthemums

They’re called ‘mums’ for short, need we say more? Chrysanthemums have long been a Mother’s Day go-to for us Brits, with the pink variety used by the Victorians to convey well wishes.

But over in their native Japan, yellow mums represent the sun and the light, with the annual Festival of Happiness honouring this ‘golden flower’. So if Mum puts a smile on your face (most of the time, anyway!), you know what to do.

Tulips

Mother’s Day couldn’t fall at a better time – spring is in the air and there’s a plethora of colourful seasonal blooms available. Tulips are one such March jewel, and they stand for all kinds of love.

In the 19th century language of flowers, they meant ‘There’s sunshine in your smile’. How cute is that? Let Mum know she makes life jollier with our Luxury Tulips or opt for the sunny Spring Meadow bouquet that pops straight through her letterbox!

Iris

Honour your matriarch with the iris, meaning wisdom and royalty. Its name comes from the Greek for ‘rainbow’ – in Greek mythology, Iris, the messenger to the gods, used rainbows as bridges between heaven and Earth. She would act as a companion to female souls as they travelled to the afterlife, which is why Greeks still plant these striking flowers on women’s graves.

Irises are also commonly given to parents as a sign of respect. They’re smattered among yellow tulips and daffs in our sunny Spring Meadow bouquet – another lovely letterbox choice.

Hyacinths

Heavenly hyacinths are hard to beat on the fragrance front; they’ll fill Mum’s home with the scent of spring. In the age-old language of flowers, they symbolise commitment, constancy and love, making them ideal for thanking a stellar mum who never lets you down.

Our Shades of Spring and Scents of Spring bouquets feature budding blue hyacinth, backed up by pink and purple tulips, spray roses and bouvardia – simply gorgeous!

Lavender

We’ve never met a mum who didn’t love lavender, such is its calming aroma (try sprinkling it into a hot bath – bliss!). These bee-friendly purple flowers will bring soothing fragrance and delicate colour to her home.

Lavender’s meaning matches it’s positive qualities, as it represents healing, serenity and luxury. Because let’s face it, if anyone deserves a moment’s relaxation and indulgence, it’s our mums!

Roses

Let’s face it, no list of the best flowers would be complete without roses, no matter the occasion. They’re perfect for Mother’s Day, especially if you plump for pink roses, which simply say ‘thank you’.

Yellow roses signify friendship – and nobody’s got your back like your mum – while white roses are closely linked to Christianity’s most celebrated mother, the Virgin Mary. Most of our bouquets include roses because, well, everybody loves them!

Carnations

Here’s another must for Mother’s Day flowers, with a moving story behind them. Some Christians believe that as the Virgin Mary mourned her son, Jesus Christ, at his crucifixion, carnations bloomed where her tears fell. They have therefore taken on the meaning of a mother’s love, making them a thoughtful choice for a new mum

Our Scented Spring bouquet features delicate white spray carnations, or plump for a pop of colour with the bright green variety in our Letterbox Spring Meadow. For a vintage twist, look to the stunning antique carnations in Letterbox Pomegranate Punch. Good luck choosing just one!

Orchids

Orchids don’t have any obvious link to motherhood, but they do symbolise sophistication and strength. Considered rare and exotic in Victorian times, and still striking to this day, they’re our top pick for any mums with discerning taste.

You’ll find all kinds among our range, from stately scented dendrobium orchids to classic phalaenopsis orchids in pink, white, and yellow.
