How To Show Your Support This Mental Health Awareness Week

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

Mental health is something that’s gaining more and more recognition – and rightly so! A huge 1 in 3 of us will be affected by a mental health condition in our lifetimes and 1 in 4 university students currently suffer with a mental health condition, which is way more than physical injuries like broken arms and legs. For this reason it’s super important to spread the word about mental health the end any stigma surrounding it and show a whole lotta love to those that may be suffering at this time.

This handy little guide might not heal your loved ones but it will give some handy tips and tricks on how to show your support this Mental Health Awareness Week to show that you care… and for every week in the year too! We spoke to Professor Peter Clough of Manchester Metropolitan University to find some scientifically backed ways to help your loved one through their tough times.

1. Send some flowers

We adore flowers at Blossoming Gifts and have always believed that receiving a beautifully bright bouquet can lift spirits and remind somebody that you’re thinking about them and now we have scientific proof!

Professor Peter Clough says “flowers have an immediate effect on happiness whilst positively affecting our long-term moods. Additionally, the report showed that participants felt less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers whilst feeling more compelled to contact friends and family.”

2. Yoga and meditation

Both of these activities help to calm the mind and neutralise bad mood and thoughts. So why not take your friend to a class, or even just practise in your living room!

3. Exercise

If yoga and meditation isn’t quite your thing, Professor Peter Clough says that any old exercise will do. Why not go for a run in the countryside or take up a new team sport? The support of a close team mixed with endorphins will get the serotonin in the body pumping and lift spirits.

4. Taking a long bath

There’s nothing quite like a nice, hot bath to relax and unwind. Sometimes we don’t get enough time to chill out, so run a bath for your loved one (bonus points for bath melts!) and let them de-stress. Soothing aromas can really aid in relaxation. This small act of kindness will go a long way showing that you care and you’re there for them.

5. Talking!

This may seem like the most obvious one but it is also the one that is often forgotten. A lot of the time, a person with a mental health condition can bottle their emotions up because they feel like they have nobody to talk to. Be there for them, ask how they are regularly and how you can help. It’s the simplest things that matter the most!

Support your loved ones through the tough times and remind them you care with a flower delivery from Blossoming Gifts. We have a whole host of brightly colour bouquets to brighten up any day!
