So many of us received beautiful bouquets for Valentine’s day but we aren’t all sure how to care for them. It is important to consider that each type of flower has different needs and preferences, however, many of our bouquets contain quite a few, so what do you do then? Clearly, you can’t care for each individually so our head florist Lauren has provided us with some useful tips to prolong the life of all the stems in your bloom!

Keep an eye on your flowers & check them daily
Ensure you keep your flowers in fresh water and keep the water level high. If you change the water you should also clean the container/vase that you are keeping them in, remove any damaged flower or foliage from below the waterline and always add flower food to the fresh water each time it is changed. Most florists like ourselves supply flower feed with the order, this will give your flowers the nutrients that they need and keep bacteria at bay.

Stem Cutting
Each time you change their water re-cut the flower stems. Using a sharp knife or scissors remove around 3/4″, if your vase is too deep to allow for this trimming remove a lesser amount. Ensure that your cutting utensils are sharp enough to allow you to cut the stems easily to avoid crushing them as this damages the water vessels and prevents absorption of water. When cutting your stems do this at an angle to increase water intake. If you are worried about dissembling the arrangement when trimming or cleaning your bouquet and vase, tie twine, string or an elastic band around the stems to hold it in place, this way you can easily remove and return your flowers to their container.

Temperature
Do not place your flowers near anything that gives off warm or cool air, such as, televisions, vents, fans or near radiators. All of these places could cause the temperature of your flowers to become too cold or too warm which will reduce the lifespan of your bouquet. The ideal temperature for flowers is between 18 and 22 degrees. Therefore, avoid keeping your bouquet in direct sunlight. Lastly, quite an interesting fact for you to help prolong your bouquet is to keep your bouquet away from fresh fruit. Fruit releases Ethylene gas that causes them to age prematurely.
