Our guide and top tips on how to care for an indoor Calla Lily plant
Light
Ensure your plant gets at least 6 hours a day of indirect bright sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent burning of the leaves and flowers.
Water
The Calla Lily plant likes moist soil at all times, although it is important to ensure the soil is soggy or too wet. They are not resistant to drought and therefore you should never let the soil completely dry out.
Fertiliser
When your plant is flowering use flower food that is low in nitrogen to fertilise every two weeks. When the plant is only producing leaves it is only necessary to fertilise once a month. Always dilute the plant food to ½ the recommended strength.
Temperature
Room temperatures should be between 50-75°F, 10-24°C, for optimal growth. Keep your plant away from air conditioning vents or heating.
Flowering
The plant usually blooms for about six weeks during the late spring and early summer but may bloom at any time when indoors. Keeping the plant root bound encourages more flowers. The long lasting cut flowers are perfect in bouquets and flower arrangements.
Soil
Use a good peat moss based potting soil that is well aerated and drains quickly. You can add builder’s sand or perlite if the soil seems too heavy and clay-like.
Potting
Use deep pots for Calla Lily bulbs, planting one bulb in a five-or six-inch pot, or two or three bulbs in an eight-inch pot. Plant the (bulbs) deep enough so that they are covered by at least twice the height of the bulb. Calla Lilies usually bloom about 60 days after the bulbs are planted. Calla Lilies only need to be pruned when they are entering their dormant or resting phase.
