Find out more about our Fairtrade Roses and how they are making a difference..

It is becoming increasingly important to us here at Blossoming Gifts to ensure we are doing our bit to help when it comes to the produce and growing of our products, so we have decided to offer our customers the chance to purchase fairtrade flowers! But what does it mean to be Fairtrade? and how does this help? Well, we are here to answer your questions!

What does Fairtrade mean for flowers?

Fairtrade certified farms must ensure safety and working conditions for their employees and a premium of 10% for every stem sold allows workers to invest in healthcare, education and other social benefits. Fairtrade works with flower workers in countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Ecuador, Uganda and Tanzania. Most flowers are produced on commercial farms and provide employment opportunities and improved livelihoods for millions of workers.

How are our Fairtrade Roses grown?

The roses are grown in the greenhouses using a state of the art drip-line irrigation technique to optimise water use. This harvesting process is carefully monitored to ensure the highest quality to quantity ratio. Once harvested, they are then pre-cooled and organised into rose variety. After cooling, the flowers are transferred to the processing hall where they are graded based on the specifications of the customer then securely wrapped and packaged with flower food for transportation.

What are the benefits of Fairtrade flowers?

Becoming Fairtrade aids the aim to protect and benefit workers on flower farms to ensure suitable working conditions and to protects workers rights. These rights include economic, environmental and social dimensions and it also aims to strengthen the voice and choices of workers’ themselves.

Growers are paid the relevant commercial price for the product. On top of this, growers receive a Fairtrade Premium, for the workers to invest in social projects of their choice. Fairtrade benefits both the workers and their children. In many areas the Premium funds free education to the employees’ children through primary and secondary school. The students that wish to continue education after secondary school can make use of a bursary scheme for college and university education. Fairtrade premiums also contribute to medical costs for both the workers and their families and has even helped to build hospitals in local areas.
