How to Make a Christmas Wreath

Nothing signals the start of the festive season quite like a beautiful Christmas wreath hanging on your door.

The century-old festive tradition is truly timeless, and is a lovely welcome to the guests who come through your door throughout the winter season.

Here are Blossoming Gifts, we have a range of artificial wreaths adorned with seasonal decorations in both traditional and modern styles. But, if you fancy making your own wreath at home, we’ve got plenty of inspiration for that too!

Our guide to how to make a simple wreath in just four simple steps has got you covered. Time to get your DIY on!

Christmas wreath ideas

Before you make your wreath, it’s worth taking time to consider the style you’re going for and the items you’ll need. You can really make your Christmas wreath your own and tie it in with your Christmas décor style.

Some of our favourites include traditional Christmas wreaths with dried cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices. We also love shiny bauble wreaths for modern Christmas décor schemes. Stick with icy blue and white tones for a winter wonderland theme, or marry traditional with contemporary using red, green and gold baubles. We also love the idea of incorporating the bow trend into our Christmas wreath designs, with a large velvet bow as a fitting finishing touch.

The best part about making your own Christmas wreath is you can really put your own spin on it and customise it to suit you. It’s all part of the fun and makes the finished product feel extra special, whether you go for a traditional rustic look or an elegant, modern feel.

What you need to make a Christmas wreath:

  • Wreath base or ring
  • Greenery – moss, ivy, rosemary
  • Decorations – cinnamon sticks, dried orange slices, pine cones
  • Floral wire
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors

Method

Prepare the wreath base

Once you’ve chosen the theme or style of your wreath and gathered all your materials, the fun can begin! Start by preparing the base of your wreath. A wire ring is often the best choice as it’s easy to work with. Start by adding moss to your ring, securing it in small bunches until the entire ring is covered without any gaps.

Add foliage and greenery

Now you can start to build up your wreath and incorporate different textured foliage and greenery. Keep it simple with the likes of spruce, eucalyptus and holly to begin with and reflect on how it looks as you go.  Secure your foliage with wire. At this stage, you should also create a loop to hang your wreath using twine or velvet ribbon.

Add decorations

For decorations, go wild! Bundled cinnamon sticks, dried oranges and pine cones will create a real festive feel, but you could also add Christmas baubles, berries and dried flowers – the world is your oyster, decorate your wreath as you like! Make sure to nestle your decorations amongst the foliage and secure with wire if you need to.

Finish off with a festive touch

Now it’s time to add the finishing touches. Add ribbon for a classic festive look or embrace the bow trend with an oversized bow at the bottom of your wreath for a contemporary touch. Secure it firmly in your chosen location, whether that’s on your front door or on your mantle piece (without a fire), and admire it for Christmas seasons to come.

Looking after your Christmas wreath

If you’ve created a Christmas wreath with real foliage and flowers, mist your wreath with water every few days focusing on the moss base to keep your wreath well hydrated. Remember to keep your wreath out of direct sunlight and away from fires.
