Flowers For The Queen’s Birthday

The Queen’s birthday is on April 21st. We offer some flower suggestions for her special day.

That’s right, this year our beloved Queen Elizabeth II turns 91 on April 21st. This is her actual birthday because she does in fact have two birthdays – her ‘official’ birthday isn’t until June 10th though!

Why does the Queen have two birthdays?

It’s a tradition dating back to King Edward VII, whose birthday was in November. He didn’t enjoy watching his ‘Trooping the Colour’ (the parade to mark the monarch’s birthday) celebrations in the drizzly and cold November weather, so made a new birthday in June when he was much more likely to be able to properly enjoy his special day. Genius!

The Queen’s actual birthday

The Queen doesn’t tend to have a big celebration on her actual birthday, as she saves the extravagance for her official birthday in June. It’s said that she prefers to commemorate the day in private, probably with close members of her family in Windsor Castle.

Flowers for the Queen’s birthday

Whilst we don’t know exactly what flowers the queen will enjoy on her birthday, we’ve put together a list of the flowers we think would make a superb bouquet for her majesty.

Roses – one of the most regal of flowers, there’s even a rose named after ma’am – the Queen Elizabeth Rose.
Orchids – a beautiful and elegant bloom, there is a ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ dendrobium orchid named following her 1972 tour to Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.
Tulips – the beds and gardens surrounding Buckingham Palace in spring are packed full of bright and beautiful tulips.
Daffodils – as the national flower of Wales, we’re certain a bouquet for her majesty should include these cheerful springtime blooms
Royal Oak – as for foliage, what could be more ideal than some sprigs of royal oak just coming into bud?
